Making a Video

If you own a Go Pro HD camera then you will likely have an awful lot of footage from your sports and activities that you may not know what to do with. This means that a lot of the footage gets deleted and often never even gets watched first which is a great shame.

The Go Pro HD camera captures many still images or a few hours' worth of footage from your own perspective for you to use in any way you wish. However this can be fairly boring to sift through and most people will just find those great moments. For the ultimate impact then, and as a digestible way to show other people what you do, creating a video montage will allow you to pack in all your best moments and make yourself look as good as possible to as many people as possible as a result.

While you might have your bad days in your sport or activity, with a video montage no one has to know this and you can just show all your best feats in one long reel to ensure your audience just think you're amazing. By laying some music over the top, you can make every impressive piece of performance seem all the more extreme, like something out of an action film.

This can then be posted onto Facebook, onto YouTube or anywhere else to show all of your friends (who you might normally have a hard time convincing to watch your stuff), or onto message boards for like minded people where you can get them to critique (and praise) you as a colleague.

To make one of these videos you will need several things. First of all, use your Go Pro HD camera and get some footage of your activity – the more the better and remember anything you don't like won't be used. Next you should cut this footage down to only your favourite moments to make it easier to sort through.

Then you will need a great song. As a rule these video montages/samplers shouldn't last too much longer than three minutes (at a push) so you should pick a song around that tempo. Be careful as well when selecting the tempo. Obviously if your sport is rally driving or snowboarding then you're going to want an exciting rhythm and probably driving guitars to match the adrenaline rush of the sport itself, but if you pick some music that's too fast paced then it can be too fast for your footage which will make the content of the video itself look slow and/or boring as a result.

Thirdly you will need a good piece of video editing software. Once you've uploaded your footage from you Go Pro HD camera, it's the video editing software you'll use in order to cut your videos together and give them a flow. This is also where you will layer the music and any title or closing credits in order to make a complete video. Most computers come with Windows Movie Maker free which can handle all of these tasks.

What would be a good semi-Pro HD video camera,?

"Semi pro"? How about "prosumer".

Pretty much everything the low-end pro rigs have in the way of lenses and imaging chips, but with a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo audio in jack instead of a couple of XLR audio connectors.

Sony HDR-FX7 and HDR-FX1000.

Keep in mind these record DV/HDV format just like the pros - so your computer must have a firewire port to import the video from the miniDV tape. USB won't work - and USB-to-firewire cable/adapter/converter things won't work.

The Sony HVR-HD1000 and HVR-A1 are in the pro line-up, but their small lenses and imaging chips are more like consumer grade.

The Sony HVR-Z5, Panasonic AG-HVX200, Canon XHA1 and JVC GY-HM100 are all in the pro category because of their XLR audio connections (and in the case of Sony using HDCAM, Panasonic using DVCPRO HD and JVC going straight to high resolution, low compression MOV formats).

There is no prosumer or pro grade camcorder with a built-in hard drive (but externals are available - see FireStore or the adjunct units form Sony); there are no AVCHD camcorders that do better than 24 mbps (HDV does 25 mbps) data stream - high is better.

Cannon mini dv camcorder?

Ok, I bought a pci video card from New Egg. It creates a firewire port for me to plug my mini dv camera into. The new problem is, I cant integer out how to get the video sour of my camera. I have tried almost everything. I hold four different video programs on my computer, including the one that came wth the video card, and every time I click on the, get hold of video from camera, i says it cant find a compatible camera. Capturing footage shot at 24P at 29.9 fps?
I shot a short film within 24P and I'm now going to cut with Premiere. But my problem is I don't enjoy access to Premiere Pro, which is the only altered copy of Premiere that can capture 24P. What happen if I capture at 29.9? Are in that any other solutions?

Computer doesn't see PV-DV53 camcorder?
I want to transfer video clip from my Panasonic PV-DV53 camcorder to PC. I bought and installed Stor FireWire PCI Card. My XP system automatically found driver and installed it. Canon Wide Angle Lens Guide: How to use a Canon Wide Angle Lens

There is an interesting feature when using a canon wide angle lens and that is the perspective stretching capability. This simply put means that when looking through a wide angle lens, it may seem that the distance between the objects more than it really is. When looking at an object that was not very far away, it may appear much farther off. The object's proportion may increase dramatically; it can make the one closest to the camera appear to be huge, and those farthest away seem to fade into the distance.

If you can imagine looking through a wide angle lens at two parallel lines stretching out away from the camera, the lines will merge at a distant point. This, for the wide angle lens, is called the perceptive vanish point. This means that at this distance they may represent a small point or cannot be seen at all. The normal lens camera can be farther away from the focal plane than for a wide angle lens.

As an example if you have two children who are similar in height, one may be nearer to the camera and the other may be a few feet farther away. Now you can take a photo with a wide angle lens, you will now see that the one who was farthest away looks a lot smaller when in fact they were of similar height. This will give you some perspective and effect you can achieve by using a wide angle lens understanding the stretching perspective.

There are a lot of benefits for a photographer when using a wide angle lens, as mentioned when there are two subjects, the one nearest the camera then becomes the primary subject. Ya, when I use a wide angle lens I always get picture edges blurred and out of focus whereas the shot's center frame is just fine. So I regularly have to crop my pictures shot with the wide angle. Is it my wide angle lens' fault, my fault or well-known normal phenomenon ? My digital camera is Olympus C750 and the wide angle lens is 0.45 by Kenzo.

Simply put, it is the quality of the lens.

One of the biggest challenges faced by a lens designer is creating a flat focal plane for any lens with few abberations (optical distortions). There are many ways to do this and all cost money. The answer could be more lens elements, better glass or using complex (and expensive to make) curves on the lens elements. The designers all know this and usually make some decision on how good they will make the lens in relation to how much it will cost to make. The classic engineering trade-off.

One thing you can try is not to open up the lens all the way, but keep it stopped down by one or two stops. If the lens is f/3 use f/4 or f/5.6 instead, this often avoids the problem at the cost of making your exposures a little longer. You can do this with the aperture priority mode in most cameras.

The only other solution is to buy a better lens and read the reviews first. A good reviewer will cover that exact issue.

Like all video cameras, the built-in audio is considered sub-par. If you plan to digitally add sound that should not be an issue.

So ultimately what was the professional photographer's choice? The photographer opted for the Sony.

Looking For a Semi Professional Video camera?

I am looking for a decent HDV camera, something in the gray area between professional and amateur, and am not sure what to get with so many floating around. I obviously want something with a mic jack and able to switch around lenses and filters. I have a decent budget, but not unlimited. Any opinions?

Nu'uanu has given you some great options, but I cannot say I agree with some of it. The consumer camcorders he listed are great! I couldn't agree more. But I have to disagree with him with professional camcorders. First of all, I would never recommend the Sony FX1 or FX7 as good mid-level options. Don't get me wrong, they produce excellent picture, but are missing many vital features. The most obvious is XLR mic inputs. The FX1 and FX7 do not have them. Sure, Nu'uana has pointed this out, but again, I disagree with his reasoning. First of all, I would never recommend permanently relying on XLR adapters like that made by Beachtek. At $170, they are horribly unreliable. They break within the first year or two, and with a high repair cost (25-30% of the original cost). Save yourself the trouble and if you are going to get a pro camcorder, go all the way and get one with XLR inputs. The Sony FX1 and FFX7 are also missing a 24p mode. 24p., or 24 Progressive Scan is a feature that simulates analog film on a digital camcoder, giving you that artsy look withough having to buy a $500,000 Panavision camera. Second of all, I would never recommend the Sony HVR-A1U. Period. Especially as a Professional camcorder. It can be very appealing for its pro features such as XLR mic inputs and HD. All of that for around $2,000! However, I do not like this camera. My biggest reason for saying this is because it has 1 image sensor, a CMOS sensor. As a 1-chip camcorder, its more of a consumer camcorder on steroids. Many people don't believe me, but 3 image sensors is a defining characteristic of a professional camcorder, whether its CCDs or CMOS. 3 chips gives you MUCH better color saturation, and color reproduction. Other than that, Nu'uana's answer is extremely credible and I don't mean to spite.
My advise of what to look for in a mid level- pro camcorder is this (not arranged in any particular order:
1) true 1920 x 1080 HD resolution. (not like many consumer HD-wannabe camcorders)
2) 3 image sensors (3CCD or 3 CMOS) and at leas 1/3" chips, but the bigger the better.
3) dual XLR inputs
4)24 Progressive Scan (24p)
5) Manual Controls (Focus, Aperture, White Balance, Shutter speed). That is pretty much standard on pro camcorders

that's about all I can think of. I highly recommend you to look at the Canon XH-A1 (if $3,300 is in your budget). It is an excellent camera, inexpensive for a prosumer camcorder, yet is packed with features that make it better than most cameras thousands of dollars more. It is probably the most popular camera among pros and consumers alike. If you want something with a little bit more of a professional feel (not that the XH-A1 isn't professional; it is extremely pro!) I would recommend the JVC GY-HD110U or the step up GY-HD200U (at $4,000 and $5,700 respectively). They have one advantage that most sub-$10,000 cameras don't; they have an interchangeable lens mount, meaning you can use different lenses. This is a huge advantage for those you want more flexibility when it comes to zoom and depth of field. It also may have the best picture quality of any HDV camcorder. Many people are a bit skeptical about JVC cameras and I was too, but this camera is extremely reliable, and does not disappoint.
My final recommendation is a camera that many do not know of. It is called the RED Scarlet. However, it is not available yet; it is to be released in early 2009. It was made by a relatively new company to the camera world, Oakley, aka the sunglass makers. However, I wouldn't underestimate them. Their first release the RED One was a $17,500 camera that rivaled Sonys that cost a quarter to half a million $$!!! The RED One produced footage at twice the resolution of HD!!!!! Thats 4K shooting. Now, regarding the RED Scarlet, it is not nearly the price of the RED One, but has some of its amazing features. It is expected to be sold for under $3,000; it is designed specifically for consumer and indie filmmaker's use, and it shoots in 3K! That's still considerably better than your typical HD 1080p (1920 x 1080) camcorder. I can't guarantee that the RED Scarlet will be a revolutionary camera, as RED is relatively untested, but it is definately something worth looking into.

Electronic Pan Tilt Zoom (ePTZ)

Every Nione Security Megapixel includes digital pan/tilt/zoom ePTZ. ePTZ was developed to address problems with traditional mechanical pan/tilt/zoom devices. Mechanical devices let users redirect the camera but only record what you are zoomed in on. This can be a problem when there is more than one subject in the scene or if nobody is controlling the camera.

    The Nione Security’s Electronic Pan/Tilt/Zoom ePTZ lets you virtually move around a large image using a smaller viewing window. Since it is virtual, you can still record the entire scene in Multi-Megapixel resolution even though you may be digitally “zoomed in”. This means you never miss a thing.

    ePTZ also saves bandwidth. In many cases you don’t need to view a Multi-Megapixel image when you are accessing video over a WAN or the internet. Nione Security’s ePTZ enables you to view a much smaller image that shows the entire field of view in a smaller window. If you see something that interests you, simply zoom digitally and the Nione Security’s Multi-Megapixel resolution kicks in. As you zoom in, ePTZ introduces more detail so you don’t suffer the distortion typical with other products.

Does anyone have this security camera: WCS-2040 VENDOR- CP TECH/LEVEL ONE?
In the Product Description is says, "This feature-rich camera allows for a pan and tilt control from remote locations." So here is my question. Does anyone know if this camera also lets you (ZOOM) from remote locations as well. Like from your laptop?

Most IP cameras are static ... the ones that allow panning or zooming or even IR capcities are listed as such.

i have a kodak "brownie" 127 camera, would a fujifilm neopan 120/127 do for film?

I don't think so. 127 has a very different spool configuration and is not interchangeable with 120 film. The way I read the Amazon page for the Neopan, it seems to be 120 film, not real 127. You can get real 127, but you need to look for it.
