We know from the optics equations that the ratio of heights
of object to image is the same as the ratio of their distances,
that is: Ho/Hi = Do/Di. We are given the distance to the image (Di) =15 m. and the height of the image Hi = 2.8 m.
Ho, height of the object (slide), given as 35 mm. or 0.035 m.
Then 0.035/2.8 = Do/15. We can say 2.8*Do = 0.035*15
or 2.8*Do = 0.525 (The symbol * means multiplication)
Then Do = 0.525/2.8 = 0.1875 meter, or 187.5 mm.
The slide is 187.5 mm. from the lens.
To find the focal length of the lens, we use the formula:
1/Do + !/Di = 1/f, where f is the focal length of the lens and
Do and Di are the distances of the object & image.
We found Do = 187.5 mm (0.1875 m.), and Di = 15.0 m.
So 1/f = 1/.1875 + 1/15 = 5.333333 + .0666667 = 5.34
If 1/F = 5.34, F = 1/5.34 or 0.185185 meter
The focal length is 0.185 meter, or 185 millimeters.

CFL bulb application question/what is right, what is wrong?

Allot of confusion among users, most common question has to do with timers. Although it is stated on cartons tht you cannot use these bulbs on timers.....the information has to do with timers other than clock type. I know many people that use a clock type timer to turn a lamp with a cfl bulb on each night and off a few hours later and they have had no problem. I have contacted both GE and Sylvania and get no response from them.
Anyone have a feel for what is right or wrong, I am not sure what a clock timer would do that could affect a bulb. Some also think you cannot put cfl bulbs in fixtures where the base is at the top and the bulb part on the bottom......sconces for example. I just cannot seem to get clarification on such simple applications.

Some electronic type timers are not compatible with fluorescent bulbs but contact (your clock) type are ok. It's not the bulb itself but because it's load is inductive instead of resistive (like incandescent bulbs) things like regular dimmers and electronic timers has problems with it.
CFL's can be mounted in any position unless it is specific stated on the bulb that it cannot. And outside use is ok as long as it's inside some type of enclosure.

New into TLR photography?

Hi I'm new towards the photographic world, after knowing D-slr and F-slr, I wished to venture further to TLR usage.

This is the area which I seriously lacked, not many TLR are manufactured new and many of them are passed on by older days, and then traded in to camera sellers, in which I believe many hidden defects would then follow.

What are the specific points and details that I need to take care of when buying a TLR camera? does all TLR takes 120 film and what kind of film do I need to take special attention of.

I still don't know if 120films are categorized into ISO, grain quality and BnW/Colour like 135 film do. Neither how to choose a decent TLR for amateur use.

To answer your question about film, many of the films you can find in 135 you can also find in 120 and 220 size and for that matter large format as well. Perhaps in your research you have come across seagull TLR's. From my experience these cameras are nothing but trouble.
I would also like to suggest a Mamiya TLR. The price is right, the cameras are very durable, and there are lots of them on the used market. You could also go for a Rollei TLR, these cameras have quite a loyal following, but the problem I have with them is the price point, because they have this loyal following they are quite the collectors camera.
I personally liked using the Mamiya C220 many years back. It was a great camera in my opinion and can be had for a bargain, around $100 for the body, and another $100 for a standard 80mm lens.

Do I need a light meter to figure out the right camera settings when using a strobe?

I'm new to flash photography, and I'm having a little trouble. I've attached my camera with a PC cord to a White Lightning 1600 unit, but without a light meter I seem to have to way to know in advance what the exposure will be. Am I missing something?

Using an external, manual flash is a little different because you cannot use the camera's metering system. The camera will be metering based on the ambiant light so any sort of flash is going to overexpose.

You need to set your camera to manual exposure, and set your shutter and aperture manually. Normally the shutter is your camera's sync speed or slower. Might be 1/200 or so (should be in the manual).

You can estimate the aperture if you know the Guide Number (GN) of the flash. If this is the X1600, the web site indicates the GN is 236 at full power, and 118 at 1/4 power. Paul C Buff is not a real advocate of GN by the way!

At ISO 100, if you divide the GN by the distance to the subject, you will get your F-stop number. For example, at full power and the subject 8 feet from you, the aperture you want is 236/8 = 29.5 (as you might guess you rarely use powerful units like this at full power - many times rarely over 1/2 power).

This gets you started, you'll need to look at your LCD to see if the exposure makes sense or not. Learning to read the histogram helps a lot, too, as if you are too light or too dark you should be able to tell.

How does one conduct a ghost investigation?

My son just received a ghost hunting kit but it did not come with any instructions for use. It came with an EVP listener, portable motion sensor, EMF meter. Any help would be appreciated

My lord, that sounds dangerous. This sort of thing isn't really a game, and there should really be some guide on how to use these things. It's not that these things are "Ghostbusters" dangerous, but like a Ouija board, many do not know how to properly use them.

My only concern here is in the EVP portion, which aims to achieve actual contact with spirits. Electronic voice phenomena (EVP) are "spirit voices" that are said to manifest themselves on audio recordings. Though there are a number of EVP proponents who insist that the phenomenon is inexplicable by conventional science, skeptics argue there are prosaic explanations for the phenomenon that do not require communication from ghost or from other paranormal sources.

EVPs are the most well known and used method of finding evidence of existence of the paranormal. With the use of a digital or standard voice recorder, it is possible to pick up voices or noises that can not be explained. If you choose to attempt to get an EVP it is wise to find a nice quiet area where paranormal activity has been reported. The size of the group that you chose to accompany you dose not matter, as long as they all understand a few simple rules.

*No soft whispering. Always speak in a normal tone.

*No excess movement or noises

Extra noise can cause a great deal of confusion and frustration when you play the tapes back. If by chance someone or something dose make a noise (cough, car passing) mark it on the tape.

An EMF, or Electromagnetic field, meter is a scientific instrument for measuring electromagnetic radiation.

There are many different types of EMF meter, but the two largest categories are single axis and tri-axis. Single axis meters are cheaper than a tri-axis meters, but take longer to complete a survey because the meter only measures one dimension of the field. Single axis instruments have to be tilted and turned on all three axes to obtain a full measurement. A tri-axis meter measures all three axes simultaneously, but these models tend to be more expensive.

Most meters measure the electromagnetic radiation flux density, which is the amplitude of any emitted radiation. Other meters measure the change in an electromagnetic field over time.

Electromagnetic fields can be either AC (Alternating current) or DC (Direct current). An EMF meter can measure AC electromagnetic fields, which are usually emitted from man-made sources such as electrical wiring, while Gauss meters or magnetometers measure DC fields, which occur naturally in the earth’s geomagnetic field and are emitted from other sources where direct current is present.

EMF meters usually measure radiation in milligauss. In absence of a moving magnetic field, an ideal meter will read 0 milligauss. Industrial EMF meters will often read 2-3 milligauss when placed in an open field devoid of emitters such as power lines (either overhead or buried).

The majority of EMF meters available are calibrated to measure electromagnetic radiation, which is alternating at 50/60Hz (the frequency of US and European mains electricity)This is because in recent years people have become concerned about the long-term health effects of exposure to high levels of radiation emitted from some electrical appliances.

There are other meters which can measure field alternating at as little as 20 Hz However these tend to be much more expensive and are only used to specific research.

The portable motion sensor, however, is quite self-explanatory; it is used as a remote device to capture any movement that may occur while an investigator is not around or available, or when the movement is beyond the human range of vision (IR, UV, EM, etc.)

I would suggest you participate with your son in these activities until he has learned how to do these procedures himself, and in a sensible manner, to stay safe. There are a great number of records from past paranormal investigations of contact or possible contact with spirits, but some have also encountered angelic and demonic forces, as well.
