What is a good digital SLR camera for beginners?

I would like buy a digital SLR camera for my husband for Christmas this year. I would like to spend less than $700 or not much more.
I'm not sure which camera would be best suited for us.
At Best Buy, the salesman recommended the Nikon SLR D40 - should I be concerned that it's only 6 megapixles?
What camera would you recommend I get?

How far is the most a television camera lens can zoom?

I'm talking professional television camera lens - for example, how far would the Panavision 300x lens be able to zoom? (in kilometres)

It's hard to tell without knowing the exact lens focal lengths. 300x tells me it will have a big zoom, but depending on what sort of lens it has, this could vary greatly

Also, this totally depends on the field of view you're looking for. If you want to zoom in on someone's face, then they will have to be closer than if you wanted to zoom in on, say, a car.

Do you mean, Single Lens Reflex (SLR)?

Generally, any camera that does not use film to record a picture but uses a sensor is a digital camera.

Digital cameras can be classified into 2 groups :

1. compact (point and shoot) cameras - all slim cameras that you see and some professional looking cameras with built-in lenses. They come with all automatic function and probably some manual controls.

2. Digital SLRs - these are the "professional" type of cameras. You can change the lens of these ones.

Can I connect a desktop computer to a home theater system when the computer has VGA and stereo has s-video?

I have a desktop computer with DVI, VGA and HDMI ports. My home theater is older and has only component, composite and s-video in. Any thoughts?

Get a converter compatible with s-video for any one of those media inputs.
A good electronic store should sell one.

Does Nikon or Canon have better customer service?

I have been hearing a lot that Canon has bad customer service, but I have not heard what Nikon's customer service is like, anyone have experience with them?

From what I've experienced:

In America, they're about level. The telephone communication for both is excellent. Nikon are always seemingly willing to go the extra mile and Canon have an excellent phone manner.

I've never phoned either here in Canada, but I've had to have Nikon repair stuff here and they did what I wanted them to do and quickly.

In the UK, they're both okay. My buddy tells me Canon repairs in the UK is a bit on the slow side but they're good on the phone and from what I've experienced myself, Nikon is the opposite; the phone guys seem a bit like generic tech guys who've never really used cameras, but the repairs are efficient.

miniDV camcorder?

I've been looking at the Sony MiniDV Handycam camcorder for a while and was confused- does it play tapes, as in a VCR? Can it be converted onto my computer and burned onto dvd's? Any suggestions/recommendations? Thanks in advance!

It doesn't play VHS tapes like your regular VCR uses. It uses a much smaller MiniDV tape. But you can hook the camera up to your TV and use the camera as a vcr to playback the tape.

You can also hook it up to your computer using a firewire cable (hopefully your computer has a firewire port) and dump the footage to your computer to be edited.
The camera should come with some basic editing program, if not I would recommend Premiere Elements for the PC.

What is the best nikon or canon digital SLR camera?

I need a good nikon or canon digital SLR camera for a beginner that is easy to carry around.

The top rated entry level SLRs are Nikon's D40, D60 and D80 and Canon's Xti and XSi.

The best thing to do it trying them all in a store, you'll know which one YOU like best. Personally I like them all, but leaning somewhat to the Canon XSi. But it's a matter of what you like and what you want to spend on a camera.
The D40 is the least expensive and still a favorite for a starter DSLR.
